Mark Newton - WILD South Australia
Opisthopsis rufithorax (variant 2)
This ant has a totally black head, slightly darker body and legs with darker tarsi, while the other species has the anterior third of its head yellowish and with a paler body and legs.
They are commonly known as strobe ants as they run about in a jittery manner and have very large eyes with extra keen eyesight - they literally have eyes in the back of their head - there are no other ants in Australia like them. Shots here show them at the nest entrance, there were quite a few workers out near the nest, so it must have been a decent size colony.
